“A Retrospective: Chew Teng Beng — Life, Art and Writings” Exhibition Opens

On 23 December 2023, “A Retrospective: Chew Teng Beng — Life, Art and Writings” exhibition opened its doors at Wisma Kebudayaan Soka Gakkai Malaysia. The opening ceremony was officiated by Datuk Dr Lim Swee Tin, a member of the National Visual Arts Development Board.

During the opening ceremony, Datuk Dr Lim spoke about the challenges faced by humanity globally despite the advancements in modernity and civilisation. He emphasised the profound role of art as a universal medium, noting that artists dedicate their lives to expressing the continued significance of humanity through lines, colours and patterns.

In his welcoming remarks, SGM General Director Koh Sia Feai applauded artist Dr Chew Teng Beng for his youthful enthusiasm, always embracing new challenges and opportunities for personal growth. Mr Koh expressed his hope that the exhibition, which serves as a tribute to Dr Chew, will inspire the younger generation.

Curator Tan Sei Hon also praised Dr Chew for pioneering the use of fibres from the residues of selected local plants in art of paper-making. Such papers are environmentally friendly and hold potential for commercial development.

Honouring artist Chew Teng Beng’s life and artistic achievements, the exhibition showcases his sketches, paintings, prints, handmade papers and paintings on paper pulp from the 1950s to the 2020s. It is held from 23 December 2023 to 4 February 2024.
