Connecting Hearts Through Music

Hope Series (5)

SGI President Daisaku Ikeda says, “The true target of music is not the ear; music speaks to the soul, creating a harmony of empathy and friendship that reverberates in our hearts. At times, it can impart in us the courage to live; at times, summon forth a prayer for peace; and at times, awaken our human dignity. Such are the beneficial powers of music.

Hope Series Chooi Poh May Connecting Hearts Through Music

Encouraged by this guidance, Crystal Chooi, a freelance acoustic singer in Kuala Lumpur decided to take the plunge of performing live online during the Movement Control Order. Taking up the courage and overcoming the fact that she has rarely performed alone with an instrument and without being accompanied by other musicians has been a great breakthrough for her. In fact, there were some who didn’t believe she could do it. But she says, “I want to challenge myself and I truly believe that music has the power to bring hope.

Although she had lost her income during this period, she determined to use music to uplift the spirit of her listeners. Many in her audience said they were invigorated through her music and thanked her for imparting courage and hope. She was also surprised to receive a job offer where she gets to use her music and creativity to benefit others. With renewed conviction and gratitude, Crystal determines to use music to nourish lives and bring people together.
