Overcoming Barriers, Cultivating Global Citizenship – SISM Holds “Compassion Day”

On 17 April 2026, Soka International School Malaysia (SISM) held its second “Compassion Day” on its campus, with enthusiastic participation from students, staff and parents. Centred on the theme “Breaking the Wall Between Us,” the event embodied the founding philosophy of Daisaku Ikeda, aiming to nurture “global citizens who extend friendship across the world and embody compassion.”

As part of the school’s Purpose-Based Learning curriculum, students from Years 7 to 9 explored real-world social issues through inquiry-based learning. From identifying problems and gathering information to analysing situations and proposing solutions, they demonstrated strong independent learning and critical thinking skills.

Year 10 students, meanwhile, collaborated with community charitable organisations to engage in issues related to supporting underprivileged children, deepening their sense of social responsibility through direct interaction with vulnerable groups.

A variety of student-led performances were also presented, including a drama centred on overcoming loneliness and indifference while building human connections, as well as dance and orchestral performances. These programmes enriched the school environment with a strong humanistic spirit and encouraged students to reflect on the importance of caring for others and embracing differences through experiential learning.

Through the integration of learning showcases and diverse performances, this year’s “Compassion Day” not only heightened students’ awareness of social issues, but also advanced the school’s mission of nurturing proactive and compassionate global citizens capable of bridging divides.
