Kuala Lumpur South Soka Community Day Highlights Healthy Eating and Preventing Dementia
On 5 July 2026, Kuala Lumpur South State held its Soka Community Day at the SGM Culture Centre, featuring a healthy eating talk by dietitian Krystal Ng and a talk on preventing dementia by Prof Dr Ching Siew Mooi from Universiti Putra Malaysia. More than 500 participants attended the event to gain valuable knowledge on maintaining good health.
Krystal explained that healthy eating does not mean completely giving up one’s favourite foods, but rather adopting a balanced and moderate approach to nutrition. She introduced the 85-15 principle, encouraging people to maintain healthy eating habits 85 percent of the time while allowing themselves to enjoy their favourite treats in moderation for the remaining 15 percent. This approach helps promote long-term healthy habits without the stress of excessive dietary restrictions.
Dr Ching shared an overview of dementia, most commonly caused by Alzheimer’s disease, as well as the key symptoms, diagnosis and treatment options at the early, middle and later stages of the condition. She also advised participants to reduce their sodium intake and adopt healthy lifestyle habits such as exercising regularly, engaging in lifelong learning, maintaining social connections, and keeping both the body and mind active.
The Community Day also featured a picture book reading session, where children were introduced to the joy of reading through lively and engaging storytelling.
Catering to participants of all ages, the event provided opportunities to learn about healthy eating, dementia prevention and the benefits of reading, encouraging everyone to incorporate healthy living into their daily lives.
