Celebrating Differences and Nurturing Care for a Peaceful Future

On 5 July 2026, SGM Selangor hosted a neurodiversity forum and an environmental workshop at its culture centre in conjunction with the children’s peace art exhibition “Jom, Into Our Peaceful World,” held from 4 to 12 July.

The forum, themed “Different But No Less,” drew some 100 participants. It featured Dr Khoo Chai Soon, a developmental paediatrician at Sunway Medical Centre, and Kok Shiew Yenn, chairperson of the National Autism Society of Malaysia (Teluk Pulai).

Dr Khoo introduced various neurodevelopmental conditions, including autism spectrum disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, Tourette syndrome and stuttering. He shared insights into their early signs and diagnoses, as well as the educational pathways available for neurodivergent children in Malaysia.

Drawing from her personal experience, Shiew Yenn shared her journey of supporting her autistic son after his diagnosis. She encouraged parents of neurodivergent children to avoid self-blame, seek professional help and practise positive parenting.

Meanwhile, at the environmental workshop conducted by the Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS), environmental control officer Bidasari Bahashim introduced its “Qua-Qua Programme,” which assesses rivers across physical, chemical and biological dimensions. Following the introduction, 19 participating children learnt how to evaluate water quality by measuring temperature and pH levels, and observing freshwater invertebrates.

LUAS also set up a booth to share information about its role and display tools used for water quality testing.

Through these activities, participants gained deeper awareness of how embracing human differences and protecting natural resources can help build a more peaceful and sustainable future.
