SGM Invited to “Rooting and Blossoming” Research Papers Book Launch Ceremony

On 4 January 2026, the book launch for the international academic research papers titled “Rooting and Blossoming: The International Forum on the 106th Anniversary of Malaysian Chinese Drama” was held at Cheras LeisureMall, Kuala Lumpur. The event was organised by The Sun Theatre and coincided with the launch of the third “Golden Ribbon” national campaign for the preservation of cultural and historical materials. SGM was invited to attend the ceremony and participate in the official book launch, demonstrating a concrete commitment to cultural inheritance and historical preservation. The book launch was also attended by Cheras MP YB Tan Kok Wai, who supported the publication of the book.

In the ceremony, The Sun Theatre chairperson Sim Kok Meng emphasised that the publication of this research collection is more than just an academic milestone; it is a vital social action for cultural preservation. He noted that many invaluable historical materials regarding Malaysian Chinese theatre are currently scattered among the public, facing the constant risk of being lost or destroyed. He expressed hope that the “Golden Ribbon Campaign” would awaken public awareness regarding the importance of historical documents and cultural memory, ensuring that neglected cultural narratives are once again recognised and protected.

As one of the preface authors for the collection, SGM Art and Exhibition department head Vicky Ho stated that the long-term accumulation of culture and academic research serves as a crucial foundation for a peaceful society. She remarked that the “Rooting and Blossoming” research papers bridge the gap between the past and the future, allowing the cultural legacy of Malaysian Chinese theatre – which spans over a century – to be properly preserved and passed down. She also highlighted that SGM has always placed great importance on promoting culture and education, and was honoured to work alongside various sectors to safeguard Malaysia’s shared cultural assets.

The research collection consists of three volumes and features 49 papers contributed by scholars from Malaysia and abroad, covering a comprehensive look at Malaysian Chinese theatre from its historical origins to its contemporary evolution. By holding the launch in a public space, the organisers aimed to make academic achievements more accessible to the general public, further encouraging social attention and proactive engagement in the preservation of cultural history.

The original academic seminar was previously held on 1 August 2025 at Wisma Kebudayaan SGM. Click here to read more about the seminar.
