SGM Johor Organises Anti-Scam Talk to Raise Public Awareness
On 14 December, SGM Johor organised an anti-scam talk at the SGM Johor Culture Centre, with Sergeant Chong Siu Sun, Assistant Investigation Officer from the Johor Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID), as the speaker. The event attracted around 100 participants and received an encouraging response.
Sergeant Chong highlighted that scam cases are becoming increasingly rampant, with victims often falling prey due to fear, blind trust in authority or lack of information. He stressed, “Being scammed is not about whether one is smart or foolish, but whether one can remain calm and alert at critical moments.”
He explained in detail several common scam tactics currently on the rise, including the “Macau Scam,” romance scams, online shopping fraud, fake advertisements and business email scams. He also issued a strong warning against lending or renting out personal bank accounts, stressing that even if one is unaware, such actions still carry legal consequences.
He further advised participants to remain vigilant against phishing websites and fake applications (APK files), and to be cautious of requests for private transactions or dealings with unlicensed moneylenders.
He also urged anyone who suspects that they or others who may have been scammed to immediately contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) hotline 997, so that relevant agencies can intervene promptly to prevent further losses.
