Abstract Art Exhibition Showcases Power of Cultural Exchange and Peace
The “International Abstract Art Exhibition – 2025 Malaysia” officially opened on 15 November at Wisma Kebudayaan SGM. The exhibition was officially opened by the National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage (ASWARA) rector Dr Tan Awang Besar on behalf of the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture YB Dato’ Sri Tiong King Sing.
Jointly organised by SGM and the Malaysian Modern and Contemporary Art Research Institute, as well as with the support from the Asia International Artists Alliance (AIAA), the exhibition brings together abstract artworks by 33 artists from Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, China, Japan, Taiwan, Mongolia and South Korea. The showcase highlights the diverse approaches these artists take in exploring colour, composition and conceptual expression.
In his welcoming remarks, SGM treasurer-general Chai Koh Pong noted that abstract art allows emotions to be conveyed freely through colours and lines, giving rise to a unique expressive language. He added that SGM believes strongly in the power of art to elevate the human spirit and foster harmony in society.
Malaysian Contemporary Art Research Institute adviser Dr Foo Yong Kong expressed appreciation to SGM for its longstanding commitment to promoting the ideal of “culture fostering peace.” He noted that Malaysia’s multicultural environment provides fertile ground for dialogue between Eastern and Western artistic traditions, making the exhibition a meaningful space for exchange and mutual learning.
In his opening speech, Dr Tan Awang Besar highlighted that the participation of artists from multiple countries embodies the spirit of “unity in diversity.” He emphasised the value of cultural and artistic exchange in a world where differences abound, and encouraged visitors to view abstract art with fresh perspectives to better appreciate the depth and creativity behind each work.
An art catalogue was presented and launched during the ceremony, featuring 61 remarkable abstract artworks from artists around the world. Additionally, SGM received three artworks contributed by Richard Wong, Muhammad Rojana-Udomsat from Thailand and Dr Foo Yong Kong.
The exhibition is open to the public and will run till 21 December 2025.
