很久以前，印度有一位须达长者，因供养祇园精舍给释尊而广为人知。
据说，须达经历了七次贫穷、七次富有。在第七次贫穷时，他家贫困至极，连食物都没有。须达与妻子三天三夜没吃东西，饿得浑身无力。
一天，须达在家中角落发现了一个宝物碎片，拿到市场换得五升米。
“这下有饭吃了。”两人欣喜不已。须达取了一杯米出门去换些小菜。妻子则在家中
煮饭。
屋内很快弥漫着香喷喷的米饭香味。
