“ The work introduced here is made up of essays recounting my memories of thirty of the persons with whom I have held such dialogues. Each of these persons has, from the individual's particular point of view, concentrated upon the question of how, as a human being, one is to live a life that is proper and deeply meaningful. How to live a life that is proper and meaningful – it seems like a natural question to ask, yet how difficult had to go to jail! In order to answer it, one of the persons under discussion had to go to jail. And another, in order to do so, was condemned night after night to wrestle earnestly with the problem of how best to exercise the power at his command.”
