Soka Gakkai International (SGI), a grassroots organisation based on the humanistic philosophy of Nichiren Buddhism, is dedicated to the promotion of peace. A worldwide non-governmental organisation affiliated with several UN agencies, SGI is a network of 82 constituent organizations, including Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM), around the world. It has 12 million members in 192 countries and territories.
Buddhism upholds the inherent dignity of human life. Based on this tenet, SGI and its worldwide network of affiliated organisations strive to promote the values of peace and respect for all people through culture and education.
The concept of peace that SGI members strive for through their various activities is not merely the absence of war, but a dynamic, interactive process which channels humanity's deep-rooted self-destructive urges towards creative and constructive ends. For the SGI, peace is more than just the cessation of war. A culture of peace refers to a society which bases all its activities on fundamental core values such as respect for the dignity and preciousness of each individual human life.
One way of helping people to respect the dignity of humanity is to bring them together through their creativity, the hallmark of our humanity. Through activities centering on peace, culture and education, SGI members strive to bring about an awareness of our interconnectedness.
While we recognise that conflict is intrinsic to the human condition, we also believe that differences in ethnicity, religion and language need not necessarily give rise to tension and violence. However, as human ingenuity continues to devise ever more sophisticated and powerful weapons, SGI members are committed to combating this tide by continually strengthening awareness of our commonalities and shared destiny as human beings on this beautiful planet called Earth.
