Soka University President Visits Malaysian Universities

On February 24 and 25, 2010 a delegation from Soka University Japan (SUJ) visited three Malaysian universities. Heading the delegation was SUJ President Prof Dr Hideo Yamamoto. The others in the delegation were Prof Tatsuka Toda of the Faculty of Engineering, Assoc Prof Victor Kuwabara of the Faculty of Education and Mr Hiroki Shimoide, the Administrative Director of International Affairs Office.

Foundation Teams Up With SGM Johor To Help Needy Students

On February 23, 2010, the Tan Sri Tan Chin Tuan Foundation presented a mock cheque of RM120,000 to SGM Johor at a charity luncheon event at Nikko Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. SGM Johor has been entrusted with the task of administering the funds for the “SMART Partnership” programme and for overseeing the distribution of financial aid, books, stationeries and uniforms to needy students.

SGM Kuala Lumpur Performs at Student Aid Presentation Ceremony

On January 16, 2010, SGM Kuala Lumpur performing groups were invited to perform at an aid presentation ceremony for needy students from 18 schools in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. The event was organised by Yayasan Bakti Khidmat Masyarakat Malaysia (YBKMM) and held at SJKC On Pong II, in Ampang. A total of 210 students, including 20 children from Tadika Seri Soka received aid in the form of school stationery and bags. Tadika Seri Soka (TSS) held its entrance ceremony for 189 new students on January 4, 2010. The ceremony was conducted in two sessions, one in the morning, and another in the afternoon. Around 313 parents, children, and TSS teachers attended the memorable ceremony.

SGM Johor Organises Course Counselling for High School Students

SGM Johor organised a Course Counselling forum for the members of High School Division on January 17, 2010 at the SGM Johor Culture Centre, Johor Bahru. The forum managed to draw 124 participants from all over Johor.

SGM Selangor Participates in Gotong-Royong

On January 16, 2010, SGM Selangor participated in a “Gotong-royong” (clean-up) at Jalan Berangan, Klang. A total of 20 members took part in the community event organised by the Klang Municipal Council in partnership with Panasonic Malaysia. The event was organised to bring the community together to clean up the Jalan Berangan area which has recently been categorised as a “Clean Zone” by the municipal. 50 years of Slovak Theatrical Poster Design

Forty theatrical posters were displayed at the Wisma Kebudayaan SGM from December 13 to 20, 2009. Coming all the way from the Slovak Republic, the posters were artworks of designers, photographers and scenographers since the 1950s.

On hand to open the exhibition was H.E Milan Lajčiak, the Ambassador of the Slovak Republic. He pointed out that the designing of posters in Slovak Republic flourished prolifically after World War II.

SGM Kedah Organises Junior Division Graduation Camp

From December 10 to 11, 2009, SGM Kedah organised a two-day Junior Division Graduation Camp and Ceremony at the SGM Kedah Culture Centre, Alor Star. The camp’s programme was centred on the theme “Is pursuing our goals important?” and aimed to instil the importance of goal-setting and to encourage the participants to attain their goals through strengthening their Buddhist practice.

There has been resounding response to SGI President Ikeda’s Children Animation Series, broadcast by ntv7 during the December school holidays. The series convey love, dreams and hope. Entitled "Like Me, Like You: The World in Your Heart", the series was aired for 30 minutes on four consecutive Saturdays from December 5 to 26, 2009. Dubbed in Cantonese with Malay subtitle, the four stories were "The Prince and the Coral Sea", "Rainbow Mountain", "The Princess of the Desert Kingdom" and "Kanta and the Deer".

Exhibition on Contemporary Chinese Ink Paintings & Calligraphy

SGM and the Cao Tang Men Eastern Arts Society Malaysia jointly organised an exhibition featuring Chen Chuan Xi, Cheah Thien Soong, Feng Jun Hu at Wisma Kebudayaan SGM from November 1 to 8, 2009. On hand to officiate the exhibition was Dr Hou Kok Chung, Deputy Minister of Higher Education. In his speech, Dr Hou mentioned that SGM has become an important art centre in the city, giving a much needed calm and respite to stressed-out city-dwellers whose lives were constantly moving about too quickly.

SGM Perak Present Dances during Deepavali Celebration

On November 1, 2009, the Perak State Government organised “1Malaysia” Deepavali celebration at the Buntong New Village in Ipoh and invited SGM Perak to present contemporary and Chinese dances. Although the weather condition was not good, the 14 SGM Perak youth members put up a spirited performance in front of a thousand people. Other items presented were songs and traditional dances from different cultures. The guest of honour for the evening was the Menteri Besar of Perak, Datuk Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir.

SGM Martial Art Troupe Participates in Lion Dance Competition

From November 20 to 22, 2009, the SGM Martial Art Troupe participated in the 14th Malaysia National Lion Dance Competition 2009 in Genting Highland. This was their first attempt to compete against 40 lion dance teams from throughout Malaysia.

Sixteen young men members were already in the highlands from as early as November 16 to train and acclimatise to the weather and environment. Some of them had to take leave from work for this purpose. "Exploring the Boundary" Art Exhibition

An exhibition of large paintings by Malaysian and Singaporean artists was held at Wisma Kebudayaan SGM from November 22 to 29, 2009. Entitled "Exploring the Boundary - An Exhibition of Large Scale Painting 2009," the show was organised by Cape of Good Hope Art Gallery and SGM. On hand to open the show was His Excellency Mr T Jasudasen, High Commissioner of the Republic of Singapore.

On November 7, 2009, a total of 80 representatives from SGM Kedah participated in the "Senam Seni 1Malaysia" (Mass Aerobics) promoted by the State Culture Department. The event drew over 800 participants. Besides aerobics, there were dances of the three main races, drum art, wushu, exhibition and food stalls. On November 28, 2009, the International Conference Hall at Wisma Kebudayaan SGM was turned into a packed, lively lecture hall full of warmth and joy, despite the topic being a serious one touching on death and diseases. Chaired by Dr Amir Farid Isahak, the Chairman of Interfaith Spiritual Fellowship (INSAF), Prof Dr Christopher Boey Chiong Meng, a professor at the Department of Paediatrics, Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya delivered a lecture entitled "Creating A Century of Life: The Significance of Mind-Body Interaction."
