On February 27, 2009, the Japan Day Group comprising of 30 Japanese citizens from all walks of life visited Tadika Seri Soka, Cheras. The aim of their friendly visit was to promote Japanese culture to people of the world and have visited ten countries and Malaysia is their 11th stop.
The visit was split into two parts. First, the Japan Day group members gave a cultural performance. The whole TSS hall was filled with the students and their family members. The second part was a workshop for the children.
One of the highlights of the performance was the Yosakoi, a traditional summer dance performed by university students in Japan. The students who performed the dance were aspiring kindergarten teachers. Besides that, the children were also treated to a traditional Japanese dance and drums performance. The children at TSS were excited and some even danced and moved along with the performers! Part One ended with everyone in the hall performing a mass dance based on the popular Malaysian folksong “Wau Bulan.”
Later during the workshop session, the children were shown the art of paper folding (Origami), Japanese tea ceremony, calligraphy, dances and drum playing.
The Japan Day Group visit is one of the many activities in the kindergarten organised to expose the young minds to cultural diversity. Through cultural exchanges such as this, children at TSS learn about the different cultures and to make friends with people from around the world.
