From the March 2 to 4, 2008, the exhibition “From a Culture of Violence to a Culture of Peace: Transforming the Human Spirit” was held at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM)’s campus in Sintok, Kedah. The exhibition’s objective was to create awareness on building peace, and in particular the urgency of opposing the use of nuclear weapons. More than 4,300 students and university staff visited the exhibition. Some 4,000 people also signed the public petition in support of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN).
Mohd Shuib Abu Bakar, Director of UUM Students Affairs Department, and Mohd Nor Ahmad from the UUM Library, came on behalf of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Dr Ahmad Faiz Hamid for the opening ceremony.
One of the visitors to the exhibition, UUM student Mohd Jelani bin Mohd Noor, shared, “Although Malaysia may only be a small country, we should have exchanges and work closely with other countries to advance peace and abolish nuclear weapons. I was most impressed with the bold spirit shown by the second president of Soka Gakkai, Josei Toda in declaring his strong stance against the use of nuclear weapons.”
“From a Culture of Violence to a Culture of Peace: Transforming the Human Spirit” is organised by the Soka Gakkai International, and co-sponsored by Soka Gakkai Malaysia and Physicians for Peace and Social Responsibility (PPSR), an affiliate of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW). To date, the exhibition has been viewed by more than 133,000 people. At the same time, in conjunction with the exhibition, more than 86,000 people have signed the public petition to lend support to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN).
