Along with Khalil Ibrahim and Chuah Thean Teng, Tay Mo Leong is widely regarded as a key artist in the development of batik art in Malaysia. Pursuing different directions in his work, Tay’s experimentation with new techniques and methods has brought him to different ends. His tireless efforts in researching various styles in different eras, determination in perseverance and eagerness to study in Japan has brought his knowledge and art to new heights.
Tay’s works were exhibited at Wisma Kebudayaan SGM from October 19 to 26, 2008 in a solo exhibition entitled “The Batik Art of Tay Mo Leong.” Hailing from Penang, Tay, 70, has been honoured by the National Art Gallery as one of the national batik masters.
His treatment of the graphic was bold and free, where thick black outlines play against luminous blocks of colour, created a fascinating and colourful body of works. Creating works using a simplified method of starch and wax, he demonstrated his prowess and mastery of the medium. His theme focuses on the folk life of Bali, Indonesia besides tropical scenery of Malaysian fishing villages and Thaipusam festivals.
In conjunction with the exhibition, an art talk on the latest development of batik art was held after the opening ceremony.
