On the eve of the Lunar New Year, snow storm hit 17 provinces in China causing great losses. It was estimated that hundreds were killed and thousands others were affected. SGI President Ikeda has personally shown great concern for the victims of the calamity and expressed his sympathies to Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao. On behalf of SGM, President Koe Teng Hong and Secretary-General Koh Sia Feai donated RM10,000 to the disaster victims through the Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia, Mr Cheng Yonghua on February 17, 2008.
