On January 20, 2009, SGM made a contribution of RM18,000 to the SAHABAT-PPUKM (Friends of PPUKM) Fund to help patients at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (PPUKM). Part of SGM's contribution was raised from the proceeds of a flea market sale at SGM Culture Centre, Cheras in December 2008.
SGM General Director Choo Kong Fei presented the cheque to Prof Dato Dr Lokman Saim, the dean and director of PPUKM. Also present at the cheque presentation ceremony were SAHABAT-PPUKM President Puan Sri Eveline Anuwar; Director of United Nations University International Institute for Global Health, Prof. Mohamed Salleh Mohamed Yasin; Toh Puan Sagiah, wife of UKM Pro-Chancellor; PPUKM officers, SAHABAT-PPUKM members and SGM representatives.
SAHABAT-PPUKM is a voluntary body set up in 1998. It was an idea mooted by the then Hospital UKM Director, Datuk Dr Khalid Abdul Kadir, after he met an English lady who volunteered to look after children cancer patients in the hospital. The main purpose of the body is to mobilise individuals or groups as volunteers for patient care and other patient assistance programme at the hospital. The SAHABAT-PPUKM Fund provides financial assistance to needy patients who are unable to pay for their medical bills.
