SGM Perak Promotes Artworks of Local Artists

In collaboration with the Shan Cheng Poets Society of Ipoh, Chin Shan Arts and Calligraphic Research Society of Ipoh and the Calligraphic Society of Malaysia, SGM Perak hosted the “Chinese Art, Poetry & Calligraphy” exhibition at the SGM Perak Culture Centre from January 24 to 31, 2008. Themed - ‘Flourishing the Glory of Chinese Arts’, this is the first time SGM Perak is exhibiting works of arts by the more than thirty local artists, poets and calligraphers with 135 items on display.

Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Ong Tee Keat, officiated the opening ceremony on Saturday, 26 January 2008. In his speech Datuk Ong stressed on the importance of arts and culture in life. He said, “Developing countries or cities may boast of huge and beautiful landmarks; but without passion for arts and culture, such places would seem so soulless or lifeless. To be developed both as a person or a country, we need to also look at the development of arts and culture. Only a society that is base on the love and promotion of arts and culture would it be full of vibrant life force that exudes warmth, energy and peace loving.”


Datuk Ong further remarked that; “There is much more to arts and culture which is not only confine to lion and dragon dances. What should be our objective view, value and achievement beyond arts and culture are most important both for us and society.”

In his welcoming address, SGM Perak Chairman Lai Soo Ha stressed that SGM has themed this year as “The Year of Capable People and Development”. With that, SGM Perak is exploring ways in which we can help promote goodwill, humanism and the development of more capable persons who can contribute positively in our community and society. And that this event in collaboration with the three local arts groups may just be the right way.

A live demonstration of Chinese brush painting, calligraphy and workshops on art appreciation was also conducted by local renowned artists Yip Siew Hoong, Tai Ching Yee and Koo Koi. Around 300 persons attended the opening ceremony including local artists, art enthusiasts and members of the public.
