SGM Negeri Sembilan together with six other associations held the “Sim Mow Yu Calligraphy Exhibition” from October 25 to 27, 2008 at the SGM Negeri Sembilan Culture Centre, Seremban and raised over RM90, 000 for the Sim Mow Yu Memorial Museum fund. The museum named after renowned Chinese educationist Sim Mow Yu, will house calligraphy, literary works and other cultural objects.
The exhibition was jointly launched by philanthropist, Low Moi Sang and Datuk Sim Mow Yu on October 25. The other joint organisers were the Malaysian Contemporary Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Association, the Negeri Sembilan Chinese School Committee Council, the Negeri Sembilan Chinese School Teachers Union, and the Chung Hua alumni associations in Negeri Sembilan, KL-Selangor and Pahang. Representatives from education, art and cultural fraternity were among those who attended the opening ceremony.
The president of the Malaysian Contemporary Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Association, Dr Foo Yong Kong said in his speech that Datuk Sim had devoted his entire life towards education and welfare of Chinese community. His spirit of “serving and sacrificing” could be a lesson of inspiration to all. He also said, “The memorial museum not only preserves Datuk Sim’s calligraphic and literary works, but also highlights his lofty spirit and character for the future generations. This will be a noble endeavour.”
In his speech, Datuk Sim said that despite his advanced age and weak state, he could still contribute towards education and society. He added that the museum could be an important resource for the future generations. As such, he hoped that people would contribute generously towards the establishment of the institution.
The “Sim Mow Yu calligraphy Exhibition” had been held in Johor Bahru and Muar. Seremban was its third station. The main objective of the exhibition was to raise fund for the building of the Sim Mow Yu Memorial Museum. It would continue to be held throughout the country.
