Spirits Across the Makyong Utopia

SGM, in collaboration with Galeri Melora, launched the Makyong art exhibition entitled "Angin Si Pauh Janggi – Kenangan Makyong Khatijah Awang", a tribute to the late National Art Laureate, Khatijah Awang by artist-poet Dr. Siti Zainon Ismail. This exhibition, held under the patronage of the Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry, was the 15th solo effort of Dr Siti who was a disciple of Khatijah Awang. This is also SGM’s first attempt to introduce to the public the beautiful art of Makyong which was at one point in danger of extinction.

Members of Kumpulan Warisan Seri Temenggong performed the graceful and courtly opening dance, ‘Mengadap Rebab’ at the opening ceremony after a speech by YB Senator Datuk Zaid Ibrahim. Also present at the event were SGM council member Johnny Ng and RA Fine Arts director Raja Ahmad Aminullah.

The exhibition featured paintings, textiles, costumes and sketches of the Makyong dance movements by Dr Siti displaying 36 pieces of her art and six dolls in Makyong costumes, some of which were given to her by the late Makyong prima donna Khatijah herself. Dr Siti added that this was a visual representation of years of research on Khatijah and Makyong, which she hoped would offer insights to the younger generation about our rich cultural history. Dr Siti mentioned that the exhibition was a tribute to Khatijah and her experience with Khatijah as her teacher, from whom she learned so much about aesthetic values, beliefs in a Malay society, performing arts and costumes.

A lively art talk was also held on Nov 1, 2008 with Dr Siti, Dr Zakaria Ali, Raja Ahmad Aminullah and Tan Sei Hon from the National Art Gallery. The informative talk drew in many art educators, veteran artists and also national laureates.
