The joint exhibition of Lam Yut Hang’s creative calligraphy scripts and Cheng Tin Hok’s contemporary ink painting artworks was organised by SGM and held at the Wisma Kebudayaan SGM from November 16 to 23, 2008. The exhibition was declared open by Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Dr Hou Kok Chung on November 16, 2003.
Lam Yut Hang, 73, was born in Guangdong, China. Currently the director of a publishing firm in Hong Kong, he has researched calligraphy for 50 years and is expert in writing various kinds of scripts. His writing style has been hailed by our master calligrapher Yiu Hong as “natural and unrestrained like the flying dragon and dancing phoenix.” Particularly exemplifying this unique talent was his cursive script which was a thrill to behold and joy to study.
Cheng Tin Hok, 57, also hailing from Guangdong, is a senior lecturer at the Hong Kong Chinese University and a full time artist. Specialising in portrait painting, he complemented the exhibition with superbly controlled portraits in ink washes.
Apart from enhancing the cultural exchange between Malaysia and China, they are here on a mission to raise fund for the “Children’s Paradise” Education Foundation. They had also joined hands in raising funds for schools and charitable organisations.
In conjunction with the exhibition, an art talk entitled “A Brief Discourse on Modern Chinese Inkwash Portrait” by Chen Tin Hok was held on November 16, 2008.
