Soka Gakkai Malaysia and The Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall jointly organised “An Exhibition in Commemoration of Huang Yao” from 6 to 13 July, 2008 at Wisma Kebudayaan SGM. The opening ceremony was officiated by Dr. Foo Yong Kong, President of Malaysia Contemporary Chinese Painting & Calligraphy Association on 6 July.
Artist, calligrapher and cartoonist Huang Yao, enormously famous for his “Niu Bi Zi” comic during the 1940s, was also well-known for his unique and innovative “chuyun shu” (Reverse writing) style. Since moving to Malaysia in 1956, he had continued to research on “jiagu wen” and the study of folklore while contributing tremendously to the local artistic and literary fields. His innovative synthesis of calligraphy and painting remains one of his most distinct contributions. By the time passed away at the age of seventy, he was also widely known as a journalist, educator and writer.

A total of about sixty pieces of his calligraphy and paintings, all painted during his stay in Malaysia, were displayed in this commemorative exhibition. Deeply in love with the beautiful structure of the ancient Chinese characters which incorporate primitive art design and symbols, Huang Yao also invented the “Wenzi Hua” or Chinese-character painting where characters are used to make a painting.
In conjunction with the exhibition, a discussion on ‘The Arts of Huang Yao’ conducted by Dr. Tan May Ling, a family member of the late Mr. Huang Yao was held.
