On January 12 and 13, 2008, SGM Kuala Lumpur members from Region 5 put up an evening of cultural performances at the community hall of Bandar Tun Razak, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. The “Malam Mesra Muhibah” was held to promote goodwill and unity at the community level. The guest of honour was the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Datuk Tan Chai Ho. In his speech, Datuk Tan praised SGM for its many years of active contribution to society, and he hoped that SGM will continue to carry out activities that would strengthen unity among its citizens. Also present were thirteen other community leaders and representatives from Bandar Tun Razak area.
The programme that was lined up for the evening included a multimedia display, choral singing, traditional and modern dances and gymnastics performance. Around 500 odd SGM Kuala Lumpur members, young and old, were involved in the event. These included 285 performers and some 200 over event support crew. A total of 1,800 people from the vicinity attended the event.
As in previous “malam mesra” organised by SGM state branches, the Kuala Lumpur Region 5 event also featured entertaining music and dance performances that cuts across cultural borders. SGM believes that culture is one of the most effective platforms to promote goodwill and unity among people.
