Appreciation Ceremony and
“East & West” exhibition

Ever since the inception of Wisma Kebudayaan SGM in 2001, numerous artists, both local and international, have exhibited their artworks here. In appreciation of SGM’s efforts in promoting culture, many artists and individuals have donated numerous artworks to SGM.

Hence, SGM has decided to display these works and some of SGM’s personal collection for the benefit of the public at the gallery on the sixth floor under the title “Exhibition of Artworks Contributed by Malaysian Artists.” The display included a mixture of Eastern and Western art by world-famous artists such as Wang Ming Ming, Zhang Da Quan and Liu Kang.

In appreciation of their generosity and trust in SGM, a ceremony was held on April 20, 2008 to present certificates of appreciation to these artists. The presentation ceremony was officially opened by Dr Foo Yong Kong, president of Malaysian Contemporary Chinese Painting & Calligraphy Association.

On the same day, seventy of artist Tan Tong’s works which were donated to SGM were displayed in the gallery on the ground floor. Entitled “East & West,” the exhibition featured some of his early works done during the 1970s such as the series “The Buddhism and Taoism Series-3.” Sketches, entrance passes, stamps and postcards of his travels to France, Europe and China were also displayed along with descriptions of his feelings and narratives of these journeys. Two large pieces completed in 2007 – “The Buddha Eye” and “Joy of Life” – were also exhibited.
