4th Malaysia Calligraphy Exhibition 2009

The bi-annual Malaysia Calligraphy Exhibition was the very first exhibition to be held at Wisma Kebudayaan SGM eight years ago. Since then three such exhibitions have been held here and the 4th session was recently opened on May 9, 2009. Co-organised with The Calligraphy Society of Malaysia, Ministry of Information, Communications, Culture and Arts and Sin Chew Daily, the exhibition was officiated by Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat, Minister of Transport.

Datuk Seri Ong commended on the theme of the exhibition “cheng zhuan” which carries the meaning of assuming the tradition and passing it on to the next generation. He mentioned that in an age where such art is in danger of being replaced by the digital age, such art should be appreciated from a fresh angle and promoted to enrich our lives.

Calligraphic works by 142 calligraphers from all over the country were displayed, delivering a wide variety of styles and scripts including the Zhuanshu (seal script), Lishu (official script), Kaishu (regular script), Xingshu (running script) and Caoshu (cursive script). With the calligraphers coming from all ages, ranging from 16 to 90, each different in his or her temperaments, experiences and interests, the show was a feast of delight or contemplation for calligraphy enthusiasts.

With the aim of promoting the appreciation of culture and advancing calligraphy exchanges, this bi-annual exhibition has continued to provide a platform for calligraphers to showcase their works and pass on their knowledge and skills to the next generation, ensuring the continuous development of the art.
