SGM Organises Advanced Level Buddhist Examinations

On December 21, 2008, 716 SGM members sat for the SGM Advanced Level and Youth Level 1 Study Examinations. The advanced level examinations were carried out for the first time in Malaysia in 19 centres throughout the country.

Penang

A total of 609 members sat for the examinations in Chinese and 107, in English. The ages of the candidates ranged from the young to the old with varied educational and vocational backgrounds. Against the background of time, educational and life experience, the candidates made great efforts to study in order to deepen their understanding of the essence of Nichiren Buddhism.

Pahang Selangor

The content of this examination was based on SGI President Ikeda’s lecture series on “Opening of the Eyes” and his dialogue with the Soka Gakkai study department entitled “Wisdom of the Lotus Sutra.” Before the examination, the candidates had to attend a series of lectures and discussions, and were also required to complete several assignments.

Kuala Lumpur

“Diligence in practice and study” is a tradition of SGM as well as a pillar in the practice of Nichiren Buddhism. The advanced level examination is not only about testing one’s knowledge of Buddhism, but more importantly, it encourages candidates to make greater efforts in study, and to develop a strong seeking spirit to learn about the essence of Buddhist practice.
