SGM Junior Division Sixth Graduation Camp

Kuala Lumpur Kedah

On December 10 and 11, 2010, the SGM Junior Division (JD) held its sixth graduation camp for JD members who have completed Primary Six and will become members of the High School Division (HSD) in the following year (2011). The camp was held at the SGM Culture Centre, Cheras. This year, 119 graduating JD members participated in this camp together with 120 JD facilitators, including 31 facilitators from eight other states in Malaysia.

Among the activities carried out during the camp was an outdoor game based on the life of Nichiren Daishonin and an indoor board game on the life of SGI President Daisaku Ikeda. The purpose of the games was to enhance the participants understanding of Nichiren Buddhism using fun and engaging methods. The participants also presented sketches based on the problems often encountered by teenage students such as love, lack of interest in studies and bullying. Small group pillow talk-style discussions were also held to allow the participants to conduct more focused dialogue.

A unique feature of this year's camp is that each facilitator is paired with a graduating JD member, without the JD member's knowledge. The facilitator will then try to foster a closer relationship with their "buddy". Before the end of the camp, the JD members will have to figure out who was their "guardian angel" over the last two days.

On December 11, the inauguration ceremony for the "Sunrise Group" was held. The Sunrise Group is made up of former JD members who have graduated from the JD and became JD facilitators. This is to ensure that former JD members will continue to actively contribute to SGM activities in the Youth Division. The name "Sunrise" was bestowed on the group by SGI President Ikeda on December 10, 2010.

Following this camp, individual states then held their own JD graduation camps in December 2010 and January 2011.
