September is SGM Month of Peace

"Seeds of Hope" exhibition

All human beings seek peace as it is only in peace can human beings live happily. In order to enhance the public's awareness on peace, SGM has designated September as the Month of Peace.

The main theme for this year's Month of Peace is "Voices of Peace: The Creative Way of Life". The Month of Peace was inspired by the Soka Gakkai's peace campaigns that can be traced back to September 8, 1957 when second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda made his historic "Declaration Calling for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons" at the Mitsuzawa Stadium in Yokohama, Japan, during a Soka Gakkai youth sports meet.

During the month of September, SGM organised various activities such as a peace forum based on SGI President Ikeda's peace proposal entitled "Toward a World of Dignity for All: The Triumph of the Creative Life"; a Peace Week at Universiti Putra Malaysia; the Run for Peace campaign and peace exhibitions in campuses of higher learning institutions.

Run For Peace

In conjunction with the Month of Peace, SGM also held a lecture to explore the role played by women in the field of peace. The Director of the Centre for Civilisational Dialogue, University of Malaya, Prof Datin Dr Azizan Baharuddin spoke on "Women and Peace". At the same time, SGM collaborated with two art galleries to hold an art exhibition entitled "The Splendour of Peace – Malaysian Women Artists Exhibition", using art to promote the message of peace.

In commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the death of National Literary Laureate Dato' Usman Awang, SGM organised an event entitled "Kekasih - A Tribute to Usman Awang and Peace" where his daughter and distinguished poets recited poems in up to six languages.

With the series of peace activities, SGM hopes to create waves of peace and enhance the spirit of humanism in the society.
