Sculpture as Idea in the Eyes of a Sculptor

Renowned Malaysian sculptor, Associate Professor Ramlan Abdullah from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) was at Wisma Kebudayaan SGM on May 29, 2011 to deliver an art talk entitled "Sculpture as Idea in the Eyes of a Sculptor". The talk attracted some 35 art enthusiasts and was chaired by renowned artist, Dr Choong Kam Kow, the chairman of the Federation of Asian Artists Malaysia Committee. It was a reunion for the speaker and the chairman as Associate Professor Ramlan was a student of Dr Choong at UiTM.

Assoc Prof Ramlan started by sharing brief ideas of sculptures and his vast experience in sculpting. Sculpture serves many functions and characteristics such as relationship, place, time, form, image, landmark, metaphor, sign and symbol. He also shared his experience working with international sculptors in producing the famous landmark – "Keris", a giant Malay dagger - at Stadium Bukit Jalil during the XVI Commonwealth Games in 1998. From the slide presentation, the audience came to appreciate many public sculptures in Malaysia and around the world such as the national monument "Tugu Negara".
