Sculptures and oil paintings of artist Heng Eow Lin were exhibited in his solo exhibition held in Soka Exhibition Hall at Wisma Kebudayaan SGM from May 14 to 29, 2011. In conjunction with Mothers’ Day, Heng displayed sixty pieces or oil paintings and ten sculptures, praising motherly love and human nature. Among the sculptures was a bronze 8-foot statue of a mother lifting a baby high in the air.
Kulim-born Heng graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1970 and subsequently became a professional artist. A multi-disciplinary and multi-talented artist who has explored various media and themes, Heng also hoped to transmit the message of equality among all people and bring hope for the new generations through this exhibition.
On hand to officiate the opening of the exhibition on May 15, 2011 was En. Haned Masjak, Deputy Director-General (Operations), representing YBhg. Ambassador Dato’ Mohd Yusof Ahmad, Director-General, of the National Art Gallery of Malaysia. In his speech, Dato’ Yusoh Ahmad urged the audience to "learn to see beauty in our surroundings and realise that all human beings, despite our differences, want love and peace." He also found that Heng’s artworks evoke gratitude love, beauty, tenderness and strength, qualities which are also inherent in Heng’s character besides admiring Heng’s intuitive understanding of humanity, dedication to his art and the spirit of continuously learning. "A society without art and culture would lack creativity and vision," Dato’ Yusof Ahmad also said, "education would be mechanical and an economy would lack innovation."
