SGM Carries Out One Hour Earth Hour Charity Activity

"Seeds of Hope" exhibition

On March 26, 2011, from 8:30pm to 9:30pm, Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) switched off the lights in support of the "Earth Hour" activity which is part of the "Sustainable Development" activities.

SGM Johor was invited to co-sponsor the "Earth Hour" event with the Johor State Government, Johor State Economy Planning Unit and Johor State Tourism Department at the old official government building at Bukit Timbalan, Johor.

SGM Johor took the opportunity to spread the importance of environmental protection through the "Seeds of Hope" exhibition which was officiated by the Mayor of Johor Bahru, YB Haji Mohd Jaffar bin Awang, on behalf of Menteri Besar Johor. Also present at the opening ceremony was YB Dr Haji Badrul Hisham bin Kassim, Deputy Director (II) of Johor Economic Planning Unit. After viewing the exhibition, YB Haji Mohd Jaffar also signed the declaration to maintain the Earth’s sustainable development.

Apart from SGM Johor, twenty other organisations participated in the exhibition, including the State Economy Planning Unit, Johor State Department of Environmental, Johor State Forestry Department, Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia, Honda, Yong Ming Motor Sdn Bhd, Toyota, UMW Sdn Bhd.

A cultural performance that night was carried under weak light, in support of the "Earth hour".

SGM Johor presented Chinese and folk dances besides a performance showcasing a creative combination of drums, florescent lights and bells.

"Earth hour" was initiated by the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) in 2007 in Sydney, Australia. Now it has become a worldwide activity. In 2010, 128 countries, over 6,000 city governments, enterprises and communities - exceeding a bilion people- have participate in the "Earth Hour," making it one of the largest and most meaningful environmental protection activities.
