SGM Co-organises Nationwide Calligraphy Exhibition
In collaboration with the Malaysian Calligraphy Association and Sin Chew Jit Poh, SGM organised a nationwide calligraphy exhibition at the SGM Johor culture centre from January 7 to 9, 2011. A total of 137 pieces of fine calligraphic works from all ages were exhibited.
The theme of the exhibition was “Heritage”. It was officially launched by YB Senator Khoo Soo Seang who represented the Deputy Minister of Higher Education, YB Dato’ Dr Hou Kok Chung. Among the distinguished guests present were the president of the Malaysian Calligraphy Association Mr Chai Mon Pit, chairman of the organising committee of the exhibition Mr Yong Kim Jung, Sin Chew Jit Poh Executive Editor Mr Lim Meng Hua, SGM Secretary-General Koh Sia Feai and SGM Johor branch chairman Tan Kiang Howe.
In his speech, Y.B. Senator Khoo pointed out that Chinese characters translate into excellent calligraphic works. This exhibition has transformed Johor Bahru into a “cultural oasis”.
Mr Lim Meng Hua pointed out that with the emergence of social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, the way we communicate has been altered. Thus, cultural heritage is also challenged. The Internet should be used to spread the value and beauty of calligraphy throughout the whole world.
Mr Koh Sia Feai noted that the collaboration among the three organisations in holding the exhibition started in 2001. This year, the exhibition moved to Johor Bahru in order to promote the art form in southern Peninsular Malaysia. He also quoted SGI President Ikeda who said that art, including calligraphy, should have the people as its foundation.
In conjunction with the calligraphy exhibition, the second Spring Festival Calligraphy contest was also organised, with the theme “Prosperity and Good Fortune”. It attracted 250 participants. After this event, there was also a talk on how to enhance people’s appreciation of this art form.
