An Evening of Music and Charity

In line with SGM’s efforts to promote peace and prosperity in the country, SGM Penang organised the Resonance of Peace charity concert at Dewan Sri Pinang in Georgetown, Penang on December 15, 2010.

The charity concert was held in conjunction with the celebration of the 80th anniversary of Soka Gakkai, and the 50th anniversary of the inauguration of Soka Gakkai International (SGI) President Daisaku Ikeda as the third president of Soka Gakkai.

The charity concert was the result of close collaboration between the SGM Penang Recycling Group and SGM Penang Fei Yang Wind Orchestra. A total of RM100, 000.00 was raised by the Recycling Group with generous donations from members and well-wishers. The proceeds were donated to the following ten charitable organisations:

  1. SJK (C) Chiao Nan
  2. Children's Protection Society, Penang
  3. Mount Miriam Cancer Hospital
  4. Handicapped Children's Centre
  5. Silver Jubilee Home for the Aged
  6. Pure Lotus Hospice of Compassion
  7. Eden Handicap Service Centre Berhad
  8. Penang Adventist Hospital – Heart Patients’ Fund
  9. Penang Thalassaemia Society
  10. The Association of Resource and Education for Autistic Children
Ten charitable organisations

About one thousand people viewed the concert presented by fifty-five young musicians ranging from eleven to thirty years old. The concert was divided into two sections : “Peace” Begins with individual Transformation” and “Music Appreciation”. A mix of classical pieces by composers such as Johnnie Vinson, Modest Moussorgsky, Alfred Reed and Gustav Holst, as well as popular or contemporary numbers such as “What a Wonderful World”, “Marching towards 21st Century”, “Getaran Jiwa”, “The Phantom of the Opera”, “Titanic”, “West Side Story” and “Lawrence of Arabia” were played and the concert ended with a lively “Lilo and Stitch Medley”.

A multimedia presentation of SGI President Ikeda’s contributions to world peace and pictures of quotes of the three founding presidents of the Soka Gakkai was also shown to the audience. The purpose was to reinforce the importance of peace in society.

According to Madam Yeoh Joo Saik, Chairperson of SGM Penang, the Fei Yang Wind Orchestra was formed in 2003. Now the band has fifty-five dedicated young adults whose mission is to inspire peace and happiness.


Penang State Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee Chairman, Y.B. Tuan Phee Boon Poh officiated the concert on behalf of the Chief Minister. In his speech, he said that peace is the responsibility of everyone, beginning within ourselves and our families before spreading to our communities and country. We need to be at peace with nature as well.

Y.B. Phee also commended SGM Penang for organising the concert and taking the responsibility to carry out recycling activities and protect the natural environment. He encouraged the general public to always have a loving, caring and sharing attitude as one human race irrespective of race and creed.
