From a Culture of Violence to a Culture of Peace: Transforming the Human Spirit Exhibition at SEGi University College

From October 26 to 28, 2010, the Psychology Club of SEGi University College (SEGi), in cooperation with SGM, organized the From a Culture of Violence to a Culture of Peace: Transforming the Human Spirit (THS) exhibition at the Multi-Purpose Hall of its campus in Kota Damansara, Petaling Jaya, Selangor. The opening ceremony was held on October 26 at the exhibition venue and was officially declared open by the Vice-Chancellor of SEGi University College , Emeritus Prof Dr Muhammad bin Awang. This is the first time that this exhibition has been organized at a private institution of higher learning in the Klang Valley.

In his speech, SGM Vice President Assoc Prof Lee Kok Kheng quoted SGI President Ikeda’s 2010 SGI Day Peace Proposal that says the real danger lies in the thinking that justifies the existence of nuclear weapons. He also praised the efforts of SEGi in organising this exhibition to promote dialogue and mutual understanding among its staff and students and to raise awareness about the danger of nuclear weapons.

In his remarks, Emeritus Prof Dr Muhammad talked about his visits to Hiroshima where he witnessed memorials to the destruction caused by nuclear weapons, notably the A-bomb Dome. He expressed his wish that the devastation caused by nuclear weapons should not be experienced by anyone again. He hopes that through this exhibition, the SEGi community can create an impact, one person at a time, towards working for peace.

After the opening ceremony, Emeritus Prof Muhammad was given a guided tour of the exhibition by the exhibition guides, who are also students of SEGi. The exhibition was viewed by around 250 people during the exhibition period.
