The Seed of Hope exhibition was held on September 28, 2010 at SJK (C) Min Sin, Ampang, Ipoh, Perak. The exhibition attracted 535 students and teachers. A video entitled A Quiet Revolution was also aired. Exhibition guides were available to raise the students’ awareness of the need to love the environment. They also shared with them the necessary actions to be taken towards recycling.
There are 24 panels in this exhibition and each viewer was given a piece of leaf-shaped paper to pen down his or her impression and opinions. These “leaves” were hung onto the “Tree of Hope.”
Standard Six student Leow Chin Nee expressed her desire to protect the environment while her classmate Wong Cheng Heng said, “From today onwards, I will get involved in more environmental activities to protect our earth.”
Mr Yau Leong Chong, the Chairman of the school for 30 years, mentioned that the impressive exhibition has brought many benefits to the children. He was grateful for SGM’s efforts in carrying out recycling. He also said that recycling efforts could not be achieved in a day as it is a continuous effort. He then called upon the students to become role models in recycling and to return to their alma matter when they have succeeded.
In his closing speech, Principal Mr Hui Leong Kan said, “To educate our children about civilisation and culture starts in the school, when they are young. The shoots of a bonzai plant can be shaped by using a wire only when they are young.” He also said that the students loved the rare, colourful and refreshing exhibition and felt that such knowledge and concept should be shared with more schools to further promote efforts in recycling. He lauded SGM’s efforts in recycling and felt that SGM was moving in the right direction.
