On July 31 2010, SGM was invited to participate in Hospis Malaysia’s annual charity bazaar. SGM Kuala Lumpur members from around Cheras (Region 5) took upon the challenge to open a food stall and also to sell bazaar coupons to fellow members and friends. SGM’s stall selling chee cheong fun was a huge hit with all food sold out in less than four hours. SGM members and friends showed their support by turning up in groups and getting to know more about Hospis Malaysia and enjoying themselves in the family-friendly bazaar.
According to Cik Rosehayati Noordin, General Manager of Hospis Malaysia, events such as the charity bazaar is important to raise public awareness about the non-profit organisation’s services of caring for those with terminal and incurable diseases (palliative care). Aside from raising funds, she hopes people will be aware of the support available to those who truly need it. Since its inception in 1991, Hospis Malaysia, has cared for more than 12,000 patients. Its services are free-of-charge and rely upon volunteers and medical professionals.
SGM representative, June Chiang said that it is important for SGM to participate in charity and community activities. She says, “It is through such activities that we manifest the spirit of caring for others and create a positive environment for others. This is how we can apply what we’ve learned through our Buddhist practice.” June also believes that such activities expose the youth division members to various social issues.
