From A Culture of Violence to A Culture of Peace: Transforming the Human Spirit at UTAR

SGM and the Community Service Society of UTAR, Setapak co-organised the exhibition “From A Culture of Violence to A Culture of Peace: Transforming the Human Spirit” at the SB Library Multi Purpose Hall, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Setapak Campus from June 7 to 9, 2010.

Dr Wang Chan Chin, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Science, officially declared the exhibition open on June 7. SGM was represented by council member Peter Leong, and Head of Public Relations Katherine Chui. In his speech, Dr Wang quoted from Nelson Mandela on the power of education in changing the world and view tertiary education as broadening of human minds for people to become more ethical rather than to only acquire particular skills or qualifications. “The new era,” he pointed out, “demands a new paradigm shift or a new mindset where peace has to be achieved through understanding and virtue, rather than fear and threats.”

One of the visitors, Clement Song has learned a lot from the exhibition and felt that it should be “organised world-wide to inspire the young generation to get rid of war and learn more about true peace.” Li Ting learned that she could actually contribute to peace and urged us to get started immediately in promoting a culture of peace, just as we were and where we were. Robin Ting, was of the opinion that we should always promote war-free zones for the sake of the next generation. “Start with initiation of human leaders,” he said, “and come to a global understanding.” The exhibition was viewed by over 500 people.
