The SGI-exhibition “From a Culture of Violence to a Culture of Peace: Transforming the Human Spirit” was held for five days (from March 29 to April 2) at the Kampar campus of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) and was launched by the Adviser of the Chemistry Society of the university, Dr. Yip Foo Win on March 29, 2010.
In his speech, Dr Yip said that the exhibition has important bearings on the audience especially for those who use chemical research to strengthen nuclear weapons. If scientists do not have moral and ethical considerations, the welfare of future humankind cannot be assured.
After the opening ceremony, the guests toured the exhibition with the assistance of exhibition guides. The exhibits showing the frightening destructive force of nuclear weapons left a moving impression on the onlookers, driving them to sign up for the anti-nuclear public petition. A moving video entitled “Testimonies of Hiroshima and Nagasaki: Women Speak Out for Peace,” which featured the testimonies of Japanese women who were victims of atomic bombings was screened during the period of the exhibition. In addition, there were two peace lectures by Chiok Phaik Fern, the Deputy Dean of Faculty of Arts and Social Science, and Alias Stephen Nah from Service Civil International Malaysia.
The exhibition was organised by the Chemistry Society of the university with the assistance of SGM Perak.
