On March 6, 2010, the SGM Johor Gymnastics Squad took part in the annual Chingay parade in the streets of downtown Johor Bahru. Chingay orginated as a festival to celebrate the end of the harvesting season in China, but in Malaysia, especially in Johor, it is the annual “outing” of the deities from the Johor Ancient Chinese temple.
This year, the event was organised in accordance with the “1Malaysia” concept with invitations extended to non-governmental organisations from various ethnic origins. Floats with the 1Malaysia logo and tiger decorations symbolising the Year of the Tiger were paraded in the Chingay festival. It was a colourful show with multi-cultural performances of dance, drums and floats from more than 700 participants.
Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman was guest of honour at the launch of the three-day Chingay festival at Jalan Wong Ah Fook. Scores of spectators, locals and foreigners, lined the streets as the parade passed through a route spanning 8km. Also present were invited guests from Hong Kong, Cambodia, Vietnam and Singapore.
