Foundation Teams Up With SGM Johor To Help Needy Students

On February 23, 2010, the Tan Sri Tan Chin Tuan Foundation presented a mock cheque of RM120,000 to SGM Johor at a charity luncheon event at Nikko Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. SGM Johor has been entrusted with the task of administering the funds for the “SMART Partnership” programme and for overseeing the distribution of financial aid, books, stationeries and uniforms to needy students.

The foundation’s partnership with SGM Johor began in 2007, and since then, more than 1,900 needy students in 90 schools in Johor have benefited from the programme. This year, the programme will be extended to the children of single mothers in Johor.

In his speech, Mr Chew Kwee San, Council Member of the Foundation, explained that SMART meant that the objectives of a programme should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Timely. “The Foundation,” he said, “attempts to support projects or causes that are viable, sustainable and well-managed with definable social outcomes.”

Programme Director of the Foundation, Ms Yap Su-Yin said, “SGM is organised, full of strong responsible volunteers and accountable in distributing the funds and has done a wonderful job in translating the dollars into meaningful programmes and strategies in giving to deserving students. Through SGM, we have achieved our aims and in many ways exceeded expectations, giving us donors, confidence in working with SGM to effectively help more people.”

In conjunction with luncheon event, SGM Johor’s youth division members also performed two culture dances, displaying the unity and harmony in line with the vision of “1Malaysia,” to the delight of around 300 orphans and senior citizens of all races who attended the luncheon.

The Tan Sri Tan Chin Tuan Foundation was established by the late banker and philanthropist Tan Sri (Dr) Tan Chin Tuan. It supports various philanthropic activities and projects.
