"Creating A Century of Life: The Significance of Mind-Body Interaction" – Lecture by Prof Christopher Boey

On November 28, 2009, the International Conference Hall at Wisma Kebudayaan SGM was turned into a packed, lively lecture hall full of warmth and joy, despite the topic being a serious one touching on death and diseases. Chaired by Dr Amir Farid Isahak, the Chairman of Interfaith Spiritual Fellowship (INSAF), Prof Dr Christopher Boey Chiong Meng, a professor at the Department of Paediatrics, Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya delivered a lecture entitled "Creating A Century of Life: The Significance of Mind-Body Interaction."

In his enlightening lecture, Prof Boey started by elaborating the situation in the field of medicine where human illnesses began to be classified as purely physical or psychological, leading to a stage where some doctors tended to view illnesses merely as cases to be treated, neglecting the feelings and emotions of the patients. At present times, however, more and more doctors are recognising the important role our minds play in causing and curing diseases. Citing numerous stories and examples, Prof Boey went on to exemplify that the understanding of mind-body interaction would lead to a deeper appreciation of the tremendous potential existing within us. Via a deeply touching video show documenting the lives of flamenco dancers Pascual and Angela Olivera Jr, Prof Boey showed how this great life-force had been utilised in battling serious illnesses, while creating tremendous values in life. Prof Boey envisages a future world where everyone takes full responsibility over his or her own health, with deep respect for the dignity of life.
