To commemorate the late artist Wong Nai Chin (1943-2000), SGM collaborated with the Malaysia Contemporary Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Association and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts Alumni Association Malaysia to hold an exhibition of his works at the Wisma Kebudayaan SGM from September 19 to 27, 2009. On hand to officiate the exhibition’s opening on September 19, 2009 was Heng Seai Kie, Deputy Minister of Information, Communications and Culture.
Wong Nai Chin is hailed as a leading representative of the second generation artists employing the Nanyang style. A graduate from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore, he worked as an art lecturer and director of Malaysian Institute of Art, Central Art Academy, as well as the president of Kuala Lumpur Academy of Art.
Calling himself a travelling artist particularly interested in Bali, Wong was greatly influenced by his masters Shih Xiang Tho, Chen Chong Swee and Wu Chang Shuo. With bold strokes or the plain white of the paper, Wong evoked the grand Himalayan ranges or vast open beaches. He also used these as backdrops against which human habitations (tiny in comparison) exist in perfect calmness and harmony with nature.
