With an aim to research on Chinese art and develop painting techniques by merging the best of eastern and western art, Chun Fung Art Club, a non-profit institution based in Hong Kong, China, has collaborated with SGM in holding an art exhibition at Wisma Kebudayaan SGM from August 23 to 30, 2009. Entitled "An Exhibition of Chun Feng Art Club," a hundred pieces of artworks by 38 artists were displayed. Datuk Yip Kum Fook, representing Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat, was present on August 23, 2009 to declare the exhibition open.
In his speech, Datuk Yip mentioned that promoting art and culture was not an easy task, given that the development of a country was focused more strongly on the economy. "This, however," he said, "does not mean that art can be neglected as it brings the individuals to delve into the true values of life."
Formed 37 years ago, the club consists of ex-students of art master Yang Shen Sum who encouraged his students to be open, and to refer to different forms of art from all eras and locality. Hence, his students’ works are rich in variety, individualistic in styles and specialties, strongly reminiscent of the spirit of Lingnan School. Apart from the traditional paintings of tigers, lotuses and bird, there are modern paintings that reflect the 3D qualities of western art. Local artist Puah Kim Hai fielded artworks which, although painted in Chinese watercolour, featured local subjects and flavours. Over the years, the students have also spread out and flourished in various corners of the world.
