SGM was invited to perform at the opening ceremony of the 5th ASEAN Para Games (KL'09) on August 15, 2009 at the Stadium Putra at Bukit Jalil. This biannual sport event was participated by over 1,200 disabled athletes and officials from ten ASEAN countries.
Opening the meet was former prime minister Tun Abdullah who was accompanied by his wife Tun Jeanne Abdullah, the patron of Malaysian Paralympics Council (MPM). Also present were were Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek and MPM president Datuk Zainal Abu Zarin.
The opening ceremony began with cultural performances followed by a march past by the contingents taking part. After the contingents took their respective places, Tun Abdullah declared the meet open. Following that, six national paralympians presented the Games flag to be hoisted. The contingent of athletes then took their oath before the Games torch was ushered in for the lighting of the cauldron. Finally, 120 members of the SGM gymnastics squad entertained the spectators to a gymnastic performance reflecting the spirit of unity and courage. The young men performed feats which included various interesting formations and human towers.
This was the second time Malaysia hosted the ASEAN Para Games, which is the parallel sports event for the Southeast Asia (SEA) Games. Malaysia had previously hosted the Para Games in 2001.
