"Gandhi, King, Ikeda: A Legacy of Building Peace" Exhibition in Kuching

From July 5 to 7, 2009, Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) Sarawak co-sponsored the "Gandhi, King, Ikeda: A Legacy of Building Peace" exhibition at the Spring Shopping Mall, Kuching. The exhibition features the lives of three individuals: Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr. and Daisaku Ikeda, and highlights their respective non-violence movements and contributions to peace. It highlight the difference that one person can make in promoting peace through non-violent action.

On July 6, 2009, the exhibition was declared open by Hj Hamden bin Hj Ahmad, Assistant Minister of Urban Development and Tourism on behalf of Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud, the Chief Minister of Sarawak. Assistant Minister Hj Hamden said "The exhibition is very informative. I hope that all of us here will learn from the three men and resolve to become peace builders in our community." Consulate-General of Brunei Darussalam, Hj Kamsani Noordin; Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, Ku Fut Poi, President of Sarawak Tourism Federation, Lim Kian Hock were also present at the ceremony.


In conjunction with the exhibition, bus services were provided for 860 students and 43 teachers from 18 schools. Visitors commended the message and value of the exhibition, and the effort that went into organising it. A total of 2,780 people viewed the exhibition.

The "Gandhi, King, Ikeda" exhibition was created in 1999 by Dr. Lawrence E. Carter Sr, the Dean of the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel at the Morehouse College in Atlanta, USA. Morehouse College was the alma mater of Martin Luther King Jr. and is considered one of the most eminent American education institutions.
