COSMIC 2019 September: From SGM General Director

Let’s Run with Our Mentor for Peace ◄ Back to Cosmic 2019 September

SGI President Daisaku Ikeda says that everything begins with a single person, and from that person the ripple expands to become waves.

In accord with his words, Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) held Run for Peace for the first time in 2005, with a participation of 1,000. Since then, the Run has become a great, powerful tide for peace.

In September, SGM will hold the eighth edition of Run for Peace at 28 locations nationwide, with over 110,000 participants having signed up. This has become a great force for peace.

The Run’s participants come from all ethnicities, religions and ages – proving that all people cherish peace and each person can play their part for peace. Each one of us can become the protagonist for peace.

What is also heartening is that most of the participants are youth. The youth are the future. President Ikeda has said that we can only count on the youth to achieve lasting peace for the future. Through Run for Peace, the youth must cultivate the ideals of peace. They must establish within their lives the respect for the sanctity of life and compassionate spirit of loving all living beings, and foster youth as flagbearers who protect peace.

War is cruel; it destroys numerous lives, all of which are precious. It causes families to disintegrate, sending many into the depths of misery. It is truly the greatest evil.

The Soka Gakkai understands how tragic war is, and has taken up the mission of promoting peace. Especially when it comes to nuclear weapons – an absolute evil – we must never compromise, not even an inch.

The roots of Run for Peace lie in second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda’s Declaration Calling for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons, which he made on September 8, 1957. The core of this Declaration lies in the phrase “to expose and rip out the claws that lie hidden in the very depths of such weapons” and to eradicate the devilish tendencies that lies within the depths of the human heart.

Malaysia is a country that loves peace and has always maintained a strong position of opposing nuclear weapons. Malaysia is one of the countries that supported the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), which was adopted by the United Nations on July 7, 2017.

Today, we must take a further step, and ensure that the TPNW is ratified by our government, so that it may enter into force globally as soon as possible.

Through this year’s Run for Peace, we are calling upon the participants to make this declaration for peace: “I fully support our government’s efforts towards the abolition of nuclear weapons including ratifying the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.” Let us continue to spread and strengthen the awareness and spirit to safeguard world peace among the people.

On this event which SGM organises, President Ikeda has pointed out that the basic ideal is “peace begins from where each of us is right now.” He also said, “As someone who has long been active in the pursuit of world peace, I pledge that, as long as I live, I will continue to run together with this great procession of the common people here in Malaysia, seeking the achievement of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).” (1)

This September, at Run for Peace, let us ignite the fiery spirit of running with our mentor and open up a great, flourishing path of peace Malaysia and the world!
