COSMIC 2015 May: From SGM General Director

Building a World Free From Nuclear Weapons ◄ Back to COSMIC 2015 May

As part of its efforts to call for the establishment of a world without nuclear weapons, Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) will hold the “Everything You Treasure – For a World Free from Nuclear Weapons” (EYT) exhibition throughout the country beginning August this year.

This exhibition was created by Soka Gakkai International (SGI) and the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) and launched in 2012 at Hiroshima, Japan. Following its launching, it was displayed in Norway and the United Nations (UN) office at Geneva, Switzerland. The exhibition not only discusses the dangers posed by nuclear weapons from political and military aspects, but also from humanitarian, human security, environmental, human rights, societal, gender and scientific perspectives.

The threat posed by nuclear weapons is the gravest and most destructive of all the threats confronting human beings today.

There are over 20,000 nuclear weapons in the world today, and these weapons are powerful enough to obliterate all of humanity several times over, and destroy all of the earth’s ecosystems. As members of the human race, can we afford to simply be bystanders and continue to tolerate the existence of nuclear weapons, in the face of such a grave threat?

Way back in 1957, Soka Gakkai second president Josei Toda issued his Declaration Calling for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons, and denounced nuclear weapons as absolute evil and “evil incarnate.” He also said that the “claws that lie hidden in the very depths of such weapons” is the devilish functions that exist within the lives of human beings.(1)

SGI President Daisaku Ikeda pointed out that if humanity wishes to solve the question of the threat of nuclear weapons, then we must reject the idea that we can tolerate at all the existence of nuclear weapons. We hope that through this exhibition we can increase the awareness of the public towards the issue of nuclear weapons, raising its profile as a vital issue and help build consensus towards the abolition of nuclear weapons.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The 2015 Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference is currently underway(2) at the UN Headquarters in New York City while the Conference on Disarmament is being held at the UN’s Palace of Nations in Geneva.(3) These two key conferences will play a role in advancing the cause of nuclear weapons abolition.

And as it happens, in this year, Malaysia begins its two-year term on the UN Security Council and assumes the chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), thus shouldering the important mission of promoting peace and security in the region.

Realising lasting world peace is an eternal objective of SGM. Let us work together to ensure the success of the EYT exhibition and tirelessly speak out against the horror of nuclear weapons, and through the solidarity of ordinary human beings, build a world free from nuclear weapons!
