Thai musicians ‘Korphai’ returned for their second concert at Wisma Kebudayaan SGM on July 13, 2003. Their previous concert was in December 2002. The concert was co-organised by Soka Gakkai Malaysia, the Royal Thai Embassy and the Thai Trade Centre. It was attended by about 350 people including the Royal Thai Embassy’s Deputy Chief of Mission Dr Thanes Sucharikul and representatives of several foreign missions. Led by its founder Anant Narkkong, Korphai is internationally acclaimed for its excellent rendition of Thai classical music and has performed in Thailand and other countries. The selection for this concert was based on the mode of Piphat, a principal type of orchestra or repertoire found in central Thailand and has been regarded as representative of Thai traditional music. Piphat is a combination of melodic and rhythmic percussions, together with woodwinds. Since ancient times, Piphat has played an influential role in Thai tradition, especially in rituals, temple ceremonies, local concerts and dance dramas. On July 14, the group gave a performance at SGM Culture Centre, attended by more than 700 people.
