Students from the Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) showed their support for the Earth Charter, a set of principles which promoted peace, non-violence and respect for the environment, by organising an exhibition at its Sintok campus in Kedah on August 11. The exhibition was supported by SGM Kedah, the Department of Environment, the Department of Wildlife and National Parks, and Yayasan Penyayang. The four-day programme included a signature campaign calling for support of the Charter. The collected signatures will be presented to Prime Minister Dato Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

UUM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs) Associate Prof Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak launched the Earth Charter programme at the university's Sultanah Bahiyah Library foyer.

The Four Major Principles of the Earth Charter

1. Respect Earth and life in all its diversity.

2. Care for the community of life with understanding, compassion, and love.

3. Build democratic societies that are just, participatory, sustainable, and peaceful.

4. Secure Earth's bounty and beauty for present and future generations.
