SGM Organises Talk on The Joy of Reading

On October 1, 2011, SGM organised a talk on "The Joy of Reading" to promote reading among the Malaysian public. The director of Mentor Publishing, Mr Poh Seng Titt delivered a lecture on the topic in Mandarin. The event was held at the International Conference Hall of Wisma Kebudayaan SGM and was chaired by the Chief Executive Officer of the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall, Mr Tan Ah Chai.

Mr Poh expressed that to him, reading is more than an interest or hobby but part of everyday life. He said that a reader should first grasp the meaning in the reading material. He also mentioned that generally people develop interest in reading by reading novels first. He also stressed that the reading habit should be cultivated from young. He also mentioned that the reader should establish a reading pattern which could change with age.

Mr Poh graduated from the Faculty of Chinese Studies at the National University of Taiwan. He taught for 13 years before co-founding Mentor Book Store. He is now the Director of Mentor Publishing Sdn Bhd, Executive Director of Cheng Bang Publishing Group and a member of the Board of Directors of Purple Cane Cultural Group.

In his earlier years, Mr Poh's poetry was well-received by teachers and students for the humour and knowledge. He was recognised by the magazine The International Chinese Newsweekly as the initiator of new cultural ideas in Malaysia. He was appointed as a lifetime juror by the "Hua Zong World Chinese Literature Award" organised by the Sin Chew Jit Poh from 2001-2004 and 2011.
